“Words can be like x-rays, if only you can use them properly…” Those are the exact words of Aldous Leonard Huxley–an English writer and Oxford editor of the nineties. Talking about word usage, Scrabble provide the window for players to make the word knowledge count. Scrabble; is infact, a laboratory of mental and intellectual x-ray, wherein, the result of every engagement equals the players mastery of letters, words, and the competitive poise.
Recall that, on Friday, the 18th of November, 2022, the unveiling ceremony of the Onna Inter Schools Scrabble Competition (OISSC) was held at the QIC Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo. This was the preparatory stage designed for the participating schools to learn the basic rudiments of playing Scrabble and competing with it.
Today, the heat, light and sound components of Physics were momentarily dismissed from the Physics laboratory of the QIC Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo. The atmosphere was densely engaging and electrifying because it was the Closure/Award presentation ceremony of the “UDOM WORD CHALLENGE 2022”
The participating schools who were seated at the slated time, well partitioned to fit the grouping, the Word Masters were in hand to supervise/judge, and the competition began in earnest. The group stage witnessed a very engaging moment because the young students brought their “A-Games” to the board-and-tiles gameroom. This stage was immediately followed by the knockout stage which saw top four(4) schools two(2) each from group A & group B and lasted for 30minutes.
The knockout stage had Oniong West Secondary School, Ikot Edor taking on QIC Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo and Community Commercial Secondary School, Ikot Akpan Ishiet engaging Government Secondary School, Okat. Afterwards, we had QIC Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo versus Community Commercial Secondary School, Ikot Akpan Ishiet on the final round in which Community Commercial Secondary School, Ikot Akpan Ishiet emerged winner of the competition scoring a total of two hundred and twenty two(222)points to beat their close contender and second place winners, QIC Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo who scored One hundred and ninety seven(197) points.
The competition had a lot of exciting moment, such as the decoration of the Principal of the host school Mr. Edet Sampson and Mr. Adiang Maurice Sunday — supervisor for education, Onna local government council all of which was done by the progenitor of the competition, Mr. Itiat Itiat, MNITP.
Some of the students who spoke with our correspondence during the program confessed their admiration for the game and appreciated the efforts of the sponsors and the organizers for conceiving such a beautiful idea and bringing it to fruition. Ms. Unwana Moses Okon of Community Commercial Secondary School, Ikot Akpan Ishiet who emerged as the overall winner of the word feud expressed her sincere gratitude to God and the organizers for making the opportunity open for participation and promised to keep playing Scrabble game. In her words “Scrabble is a beautiful game”
Dignitaries at the Closure/Award presentation ceremony of the “UDOM WORD CHALLENGE 2022” include, Mr. Adiang Maurice Sunday_supervisor for education, Onna local government council; Mr. Edet Sampson_principal QIC Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo; Pastor. Okokon IkoAbasi, Head Teacher Kingdom Heritage Model School(KHMS) Ndon Eyo. Similarly, word masters who moderate the session were; Prince Ubong Akpan_Chairman of PDP ward chairmen Forum, Onna; Mr. Ita Ekpoh_Quality Assurance Officer Onna Education Authority; Mr. Aniefiok Nathaniel Ekam.
The Onna Inter School Scrabble Competition (OISSC) 2022 ended in a bright note as winners were presented with amazing prices and a promise to procure JAMB forms for each of the winners was made by Mr. Itiat Itiat MNITP, on behalf of the organizers as a way to encourage others.
Mr Itiat also applauded the giant stuts from Dr Nathaniel Adiakpan and Dr Ignatius Akpabio that gave this initiative the breathe of life. He admonished the students to take thier studies serious, shun vices so that can come out tops in their career pursuit just like the duo of Dr Ignatius Akpabio and Dr Nathaniel Adiakpan.
It was agreed that Scrabble should be included as a competing game during individual school’s Inter House Sports Competition going forward with lofty prices from teaminternational.com.ng being the official insignia of the sponsor to serve as push factor to have scrabble being played in every household.
