The Physics laboratory of the prestigious QIC Senior Science School, Ndon Eyo was filled to it capacity with students drawn from all the public secondary schools in ONNA local government in company of their Games Masters. It was the venue for the first phase: the unveiling of the maiden edition of ONNA Inter Schools Scrabble Competition Tagged “UDOM WORD CHALLENGE 2022”.
The competition designed to hunts for rough talents to feed the global Scrabble space was set in motion after a brief opening rituals with an address by Prince Ubong Akpan _ the Chairman of the PDP ward chairmen in ONNA. In his speech, he commended the progenitor and organizer for considering Scrabble game, and urged the students to make the best of the event by learning, competing and enjoying themselves.
The progenitor, Mr Itiat Itiat, MNITP in his welcome address appreciated God for the grace to host the competition; an idea he confessed, has been incubated for a long period of time. He observed that Scrabble has not received the attention needed within our clime although, it has enormous benefits, especially for the youths. Mr Itiat emphasized on the need to encourage the youths to feed their minds with positive activities that are capable of promoting their academic and social well beings, pointing therefore that, Scrabble ranks top in the list of such activities. Mr. Itiat was in the company of his family, to show that the beautiful game of Scrabble is a perfect companion for any family pastime.
Mr Itiat also took out time to appreciate most profoundly Dr Nathaniel Adiakpan _ permanent secretary government house, Uyo; Mr. Harrison Ekpo _ state secretary of PDP in Akwa Ibom State and Dr. Ignatius Akpabio for their substantial support towards the success of this maiden edition of the competition.
He thanked all the Games masters for bringing their students to participate in the competition and promised that they are in for a pleasant experience with the tile-and-board game.
Also present at the event was the supervisor for education, Onna local government council, Mr Adiang Maurice Sunday who, remarkably admonishes the participating school to make good use of the opportunity presented to them by the organizers of the competition to learn and master the game, noting that, apart from playing Scrabble professionally, it is oftentimes added as a hobby to boost one’s CV. Mr Sunday also thanked the organizers of the competition and highlighted that these will expose the students to positive self development.
Other speakers at the unveiling ceremony of the ONNA Inter School Scrabble Competition were; Mr. Edet Sampson, the principal of the host school; Hon. Kinsley Johnny _ president, Coastal Allstars SC; Mr. Ita Ekpoh _ Education Authority/Quality Control Officer and Mr. James James _ Director of Sports ONNA Education Committee.
Shortly after the addresses, was the induction ceremony, where some outstanding Scrabble players within the locality were inducted into the Word Masters Hall of Fame with branded jersey and the games masters were also decorated accordingly.
The participating students were given the chance to watch the Word Masters encounter themselves in what could be best described as a Scrabble Word Feud. This was to get the students acquiented with the basic rules of the game in preparation for their competition coming up on the 24th of November, 2022.
Speaking on behalf of all the games masters at the competition Mr Enobong Akpabio _ secretary, Forum of Game Masters and game master of Onna People High School, Abat, commended the effort of the organizers for putting together such a creative and interesting competition. He used the opportunity to call on well-meaning individuals, sport lovers and public spirited leaders to emulate this gesture to promote sporting activities at the secondary school level with the aim of hunting for talents for the national and global sporting space.
All participating school went home with a brand new Scrabble kit each to enable practice and branded exercise books. A closing prayer was offered by Ms. Aniekan Daniel Ufot the games mistress of government secondary school, Afaha Inang and with that the unveiling ceremony of the “UDOM WORD CHALLENGE 2022” came to it climax.
