The ONNA Council Chairman, Hon. Kufre Umoren, has officially declared open the Sustainable Primary Eye Care Services (SPECS), a program aimed at providing universal eye health coverage.

The declaration took place on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at the ONNA Council Secretariat Hall.

Sponsored by VCARE for Development Foundation in partnership with the Tulsi Chianti Foundation, the initiative has previously offered free eye care services in two other local government areas in Akwa Ibom State since birth.

During the launch, Hon. Umoren expressed gratitude to the programโ€™s facilitators for their humanitarian efforts to address eye health issues.

He emphasized the importance of good health as part of his agenda for the people of ONNA, stating that clear vision is essential for a better quality of life.

The Council Chairman urged indigenes to take advantage of the free services to check and safeguard their eyesight.

While unveiling the program, the assistant manager of the program, Dr. Asifa, mentioned that VCDF is dedicated to eliminating avoidable blindness through a strong network of hospitals and primary health care centers, extensive outreach work, and a willingness to provide services to all, regardless of their ability to pay.

He stated that the SPECS program focuses on eye health care, which includes all aspects of health care such as promotive, preventive, treatment, and rehabilitative for all eye conditions, and that the program since conception has visited two local governments in Akwa Ibom with 377 successful eye surgeries.

Dignitaries who graced the events are the Vice Chairman, Hon. Mfon Uko, the Council Secretary, Arch Mfon Akpabio, the Leader of Legislative Council, Hon. Samuel Felix, Councillors, and a host of other personalities.
