Elder Iniabasi Ekanem: A Private Citizen’s Perspective on Sports Development
Sports serve as a vital conduit out of poverty, leveraging skill development and strategic nurturing. Indeed, the grassroots brim with untapped potential, akin to unpolished diamonds awaiting a maestro’s touch to reveal their brilliance.
Elder Iniabasi Ekanem, as Chairman of the ONNA Transition Committee, has been relentless in his pursuit of sporting talent within ONNA, ensuring that no potential is overlooked.
Under his stewardship, ONNA Local Government has witnessed an unprecedented surge in sporting events. Notably, during the recent Governor’s Cup in Akwa Ibom State, ONNA’s athletes distinguished themselves, soaring to the top of the Eket qualification Zone. Despite their eventual quarterfinals exit, Team ONNA’s performance was a testament to their football prowess.
It’s also commendable that during his tenure, ONNA’s global community came together to host the inaugural ONNA USA Houston Inter-secondary Schools Football Competition. Orchestrated by Obong Sam Etukudo, President of the ONNA USA Houston sociocultural group, this event marked a gathering of football aficionados worldwide. The victorious schools received substantial monetary rewards and gleaming trophies, a gesture that underscores the value placed on sports within the diaspora.
The Coastal Allstars SC ONNA, led by Hon Kingsley Johnny, has flourished thanks to Elder Iniabasi’s generous support. His provision of branded jerseys and the ongoing efforts to secure a site for the club’s future clubhouse exemplify his commitment to nurturing local sports.
The festive seasons consistently spark a flurry of grassroots football competitions, which, if harnessed effectively, could transform the economic landscape for the youth.
To build upon these achievements, Elder Iniabasi Ekanem is encouraged to collaborate with ONNA Local Football Council, helmed by Hon Nda Nda. Together, they can enact policies that will amplify the impact of sports development, aligning with the Arise Agenda championed by Governor Umo Eno.
