Celebrating our Heroes: Christy Uduak Essien – Igbokwe
Christy Uduak Essien-Igbokwe, known as Nigeria’s “Lady of Songs,” was a celebrated musician and actress born on November 11, 1960. She made significant contributions to Nigerian music with hits like “Seun Rere” and “Tete Nula,” and was the first female president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN).
Beyond her artistic talents, Christy played a pivotal role in political advocacy. She was instrumental in the abolition of the onshore-offshore oil dichotomy, benefiting the littoral states of Nigeria. Additionally, her efforts ensured the continued existence of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), which faced potential dissolution.
Her legacy extends to numerous charity projects and she received several awards for her contributions to music and society. Christy passed away on June 30, 2011, but her impact on Nigerian culture and politics remains influential.
