GOVERNOR ENO OPENS WORKSHOP ON NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR DEVELOPMENT OF STATISTICS IN UYO
A two-day workshop on national strategy for the development of statistics(NSDS) phase 2024- 2028 for Southern stakeholders has been opened in Uyo.
Declaring the workshop open the state governor Pastor Umo Eno disclosed that Akwa Ibom State has joined the League of States in the federation with legislation to establish the akwa-ibom State Bureau of Statistics and Akwa Ibom State Statistical System.
Represented by the Commissioner for Economic Development Mr Emem Bob, the Governor noted that there is a need for collaboration of state and national for the production of official statistics that all stakeholders will rely on for their respective programmes and projects.
“The selection of Akwa Ibom state to host the south-south zone of this workshop is an opportunity and aligns with our ongoing efforts to establish a modernized Akwa-Ibom State Bureau of Statistics(AKSB).
“Globally statistics is considered a public good and I encourage all participants to contribute diligently to the new NSDS to address gaps and challenges hindering the production of unified data that accurately reflects current emerging realities in our societies.,” the Governor’s representative said.
He said the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed into law the bill for the Bureau of Statistics and Akwa Ibom State Statistical System to ensure efficient and accurate collecting and gathering of data.
Earlier the Statistician General of the federation and chief executive officer National Bureau of Statistics Prince Adeyemi Adeniram said the workshop has become necessary to bring everyone on the board.
He said the production of a national strategy for the development of statistics 2024-2028 will engage all critical stakeholders from the local government areas up to the national level to produce acceptable data for the nation.
The purpose of this workshop he said is to drive “Nigeria’s Knowledge Economy and Implications for Statistical Development and Management to ensure the provision of the right data to the right people at the right time.
