ASUP Chairman’s Cup kicks off in Akwapoly

The maiden edition of the ASUP Chairman’s Cup football competition, a brainchild of the Comrade Eteyen Uko led Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, ASUP, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic Chapter, kicked off last week among the various Schools of the institution.
The tournament is part of activities to mark the commencement of Comrade Uko’s second term in office as ASUP Chairman.
The official kick off ceremony which was performed by the Dean, School of Evening/Part-Time Programme, Dr Lionel Ukoka had the ambitious School of Environmental Studies Team slugging it out with a resilient School of Communication Arts Team on Wednesday, May 24th at the Polytechnic’s football field.
The first goal of the tournament came barely 25 minutes into the game with a shoot from Idorenyin Umoh of the School of Communication. Their hope of winning their first leg match was aborted with an equaliser by Itiat Itiat who utilised a penalty awarded to them by the referee. The march ended in a 1-1 draw.
The second match held on Friday, May 26, 2023 which saw the Polytechnic’s Registrar, Mr Godswill Udofah, performing the kick off ceremony witnessed a clash between a rampaging School of Business/Management and an optimistic School of Engineering. The march produced six goals with the School of Business and Management beating their Engineering counterpart 5-1.
The next phase of the competition will see the School of Applied Sciences taking on Communication Arts at a date to be fixed by the Local Organising Committee, LOC
Other fixtures include the School of Enterprise Programmes versus Business Management, School of Environmental Studies versus School of Applied Sciences as well as School of Engineering versus School of Enterprise Programmes.
The winners of each group and the runner are expected to proceed to the semi final of the tournament.
Speaking to Sports Correspondents, the ASUP Chairman, Comrade Eteyen Uko said the competition is to enable academic staff have a social life after the stress of teaching and research as well as help them keep fit which was a prerequisite for good health.
He called on Women in Academics to come out and support their male counterparts all through the competition. The ASUP Chairman also announced plans to organise a Workshop on Result Computation and Time Table among others as part of his administration’s effort to build capacity among academic staff of the Polytechnic and thanked all ASUP members for their support and solidarity to the Union.
